Please don't hesitate to mention nonmysteries in Read Me Deadly. Our belief is that a good book is a good book no matter what the genre.

Another book that comes to mind given that Onion heading is T. C. Boyle's WORLD'S END, a book of historical fiction/dark comedy featuring two families, the unlucky Van Brunts and the fortunate Van Warts, and set in New York's Hudson River Valley. The reader sees generations of these two families in three time periods: the late 1600s, the 1940s, and the late 1960s. It's a wonderful book.

By the way, I added your Words at Play to our blog roll in The Skinny. Fun!Georgette Spelvinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13853710671433406351noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3566219501850777383.post-91789588193129272172011-11-05T14:22:08.657-04:002011-11-05T14:22:08.657-04:00I consider myself pretty well-read, but, man, ever...I consider myself pretty well-read, but, man, everytime I pop in, I realize otherwise! So many books, so little time! As to what the headline conjures. First thing that popped into my head was that television show called "Charmed." Which is a little embarrassing because I used to get a kick out of it.

Scratch that. What really came to my head was a charming (truly, not just punning) little novel called CHARMS FOR THE EASY LIFE by Kaye Gibbons. And then that reminded me of the book PRACTICAL MAGIC by Alice Hoffman. However, neither of these a crime novels. Both are about women growing into their powers, in the magic sense and also in the personal sense.Lisa Alberhttp://lisaalber.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3566219501850777383.post-31529657287718174752011-11-04T19:47:22.106-04:002011-11-04T19:47:22.106-04:00Kev, I hope you do pick up THE INSANE TRAIN. It...Kev, I hope you do pick up THE INSANE TRAIN. It's a very satisfying read. I love writers with distinctive voices and series with protagonists who are unusual without being "gimmicky." Russell's Hook Runyon series has both of those features.

Thanks for mentioning the movie Speed. Just when you think the action is over, whoops, here we go again.... It's drizzling a little bit, and this might be a good night for it.

Nikki and Sister Mary, I did read Greenan's IT HAPPENED IN BOSTON? It's another good one.

Della, I like Mr. Moto, too.Georgette Spelvinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13853710671433406351noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3566219501850777383.post-61412157271869675982011-11-04T17:39:35.766-04:002011-11-04T17:39:35.766-04:00Thanks for these book suggestions, Georgette. A ma...Thanks for these book suggestions, Georgette. A man trying to snatch a Skittle with his lips off a model train as the train whizzes around a circular track. This must be a Monty Python Flying Circus setup. I can offer a book that satisfies the elements of the Onion sentence. John Marquand's MR. MOTO IS SO SORRY. It's the 1930s. Two young Americans ride a train across Asia to Ghuru Nor, Mongolia. Secret agents from Japan and Russia search the train for a special cigarette lighter. These countries are jousting over Manchuria. I like this series and this book.Della Streetwisehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05438127536935500336noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3566219501850777383.post-91751686966300945292011-11-04T14:01:56.026-04:002011-11-04T14:01:56.026-04:00Yes! I have that one on my TBR shelf. Pretty sure Georgette has read it.

I just listened to the audio of Murder on the Orient Express a couple of weeks ago. It reads like a classic. I read a Greenan a long time ago. It wasn't the Algernon Pendleton but it was as you describe: odd and brilliant.

A book for the heading. Christie's Murder on the Orient Express. Suits all the criteria! Thanks for the reminder , Georgette. It sounds sensational.

Your closing question has me sitting at the station scratching my head. My thoughts don't roll along the same tracks as yours and I can't think of a book. I can contribute a movie though. Speed with Dennis Hopper, Keanu Reeves, Sandra Bullock. If I remember rightly, Hopper rigs up a bomb that will detonate if a city bus drops under a certain speed. Bullock was a bus passenger but she moves to the driver's seat because she has a history of speeding tickets while Reeves is the cop who tries to defuse the bomb while the bus is moving. I don't want to ruin the movie for someone who hasn't sen it so trust me, this movie has the elements of the Onion newswire. KevAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
