I don't want to say anything more. I'm surprised that this was cited as a criticism.

I also like to see what's happening on the home front. It's true that there's nothing unusual about the problems Neuhaus's cops have at home, but I don't think that means they're clichéd; more like realistic. They're definitely proof of the sort that "you can't have it all, baby."Georgette Spelvinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13853710671433406351noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3566219501850777383.post-9763980272434486872013-04-09T17:45:29.977-04:002013-04-09T17:45:29.977-04:00I can comment but not intelligently via ipad and I...I can comment but not intelligently via ipad and I am not on chrome, at least I don't think I am heheMaltese Condorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06327846051123983457noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3566219501850777383.post-51936453107176988372013-04-09T16:50:33.836-04:002013-04-09T16:50:33.836-04:00Here is the Chrome iOS test. Here is the Chrome iOS test.Bonniehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04626970089520875514noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3566219501850777383.post-56753226970337730412013-04-09T16:19:09.788-04:002013-04-09T16:19:09.788-04:00@SMM & GS: What I get is the sign-in boxes su...@SMM & GS: What I get is the sign-in boxes superimposed over the text of the comment box, and no amount of poking around or touching gives me the keyboard pop-up. I do have Chrome on the iPad, so I'll try that next time. It's still a tiny bit of a pain, because I usually read my updates here via Pulse, which unfortunately does not give you access to comments unless you choose "Read on the Web," which, of course, defaults to Safari. I do web design on the side, so I sympathize with OS issues, especially now we're trying to accommodate everything from a tiny phone to a wide-screen TV.

Re: Snow White, if I recall correctly, the book club complained that the blackouts were never really explained and that the home lives of the detectives were clichéd, or something like that. I know one of you ranted about too much personal life in other contexts (certainly including Jemma and Duncan in Deborah Crombie's books), but I personally love to have glimpses of home lives mixed in, particularly in contrast to someone like V.I. Warshawski, who has *no life at all* apparently outside her investigations (and whose whiney, passive-aggressive and TSTL cousin may just stop me reading her books). My current pet-peeve is the interminable nonsexual relationship; e.g. Jim Qwilleran and his coy Polly, or Hannah Swensen with her perennial two boyfriends. Particularly in police procedurals, it doesn't seem realistic to me *not* to give at least a glimpse of how hard it is to reconcile work and home, and if someone can depict that realistically and sympathetically, I'm all for it. Maybe it's backlash from that "you can have it all, baby" nonsense we boomers were propagandized with as teenagers. (Bah, humbug!) But I've only scraped the surface in this book so far. I've gotten to where the woman is pushed from the pedestrian bridge onto the car below.Bonniehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04626970089520875514noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3566219501850777383.post-12115884312963091652013-04-09T15:30:35.203-04:002013-04-09T15:30:35.203-04:00Hey, Bonnie. I hope it's just a browser change that will fix that for you.

Envy your ability to read the German original. My own German wouldn't be up to it. Regarding the pans: It isn't a book without flaws; I'd revise the last quarter, because the suspense suffers. While the plot as a whole isn't very realistic, whiffs of it have happened. (After you read it, you'll know what I mean.) I enjoyed it. I'll look forward to your thoughts about it.Georgette Spelvinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13853710671433406351noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3566219501850777383.post-27804059714030248042013-04-09T15:06:32.389-04:002013-04-09T15:06:32.389-04:00Hi Bonnie, I pulled out my iPad and was able to co...Hi Bonnie, I pulled out my iPad and was able to comment, as you can see. it was a little funky, though. I'm slowly working my way through the original (thanks to a generous Swiss friend whose sister works in a bookstore), as my reading-German is nowhere as fast as it was in the good old days when I lived in Austria. Distinctly remember being a fan of a police procedural out of Germany during that time (70s-early 80s) but have tried thus far unsuccessfully to track it down.
By the way, you guys know it's impossible to post a comment from the iPad on here; right? Or is it just me?Bonniehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04626970089520875514noreply@blogger.com
